Interview with photographer/videgrapher Camille Santiago
Upcoming Brisbane singer/songwriter Erin-Louise, commissioned Camille for a shoot for her soon-to-be-released EP. The photos are stunning!
Camille’s video projects include We Heart Collective and Raleigh Paper’s Mohawk Show at Lightspace in early June 2011. You can watch all of these on Camille’s Vimeo profile.
Here we’ve featured just a few snippets of her work – so I recommend checking out her website and blog.
In collaboration with The Hungry Workshop (who featured on Design Montage here), Camille produced this beautiful video on the art of letterpress…
How have you got to where you are today?
Creativity runs in my blood. When I was 5, my family and I moved from The Philippines to New Zealand (and then to Australia). Although I didn’t grow up in the same environment as my family back in the mother land, most of us have careers and hobbies in a creative field, from music to animation to interior design, so I guess it’s all in the family! I was always interested in art, and when I got to my early teens I decided to pursue this in the form of photography and shortly after, graphic design.
In a few words, describe yourself…
I am a motivated, outgoing person with a penchant for making lists and planning things months and years ahead of time.
What are you spending your time on at the moment?
Apart from designing websites and brand identities at work, I am currently editing photos for an exhibition I will be in during July as part of the We Heart Collective.
I am constantly planning future conceptual and fashion photoshoots, and I am also trying to spend time identifying and perfecting my own style so that I have a clear understanding of what it is that separates me from others.
Do you have a ritual for getting into the creative mindset? Or a creative process?
I find that I have similar processes for both photography and graphic design. I always aim to consider the concept of what I am designing or shooting first. If I am running into a creative block, this usually means I haven’t taken time to consider and develop the concept further – this is when I then look for inspiration and do some more research before sketching my ideas down and then finally moving them across to the screen or camera. I also write to-do lists (using paper and pen) to help me manage my time and de-clutter my mind.
What or who inspires you?
Apart from other really talented photographers and graphic designers, I am mostly inspired by the music I listen to, beautiful blogs and good food, the world around us and science. My imagination was set aflame when I was little, after reading lots of science-fiction/fantasy-fiction books: a hobby I still try to maintain.
I am also inspired by the creative, talented people I constantly surround myself with who support me and who have just as much drive as I do.
What are you most proud of?
I’ve never been asked this question before, but it’s made me think really hard! I guess I’m mostly proud that I taught myself photography and Photoshop in my early teens, and now most recently, videography. I am happy that these came somewhat naturally to me and that people are enjoying the work that I put up each time.
When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I actually decided I was going to be an artist when I was 7 — it just took time to discover what form of art I loved more than others.
