Interview with colour specialist Ann Whitaker

Today’s interview isn’t with a creative as such, but nevertheless, her story is an inspiring one. As a creative, I really love colour – and lots of it! And through talking to Ann, I was inspired to hear about her work with colour and some of the amazing stories.

Ann Whitaker, from House of Colour, uses colour every day to improve people’s lives and their image.

Ann seeks to find the colours that best suit each individual. She looks for the shades that will accentuate their features, and make each client look healthy and vibrant. The images above are just samples of the variety of shades and tones that Ann will use to “discover the colours” of her clients.

A couple of before and afters of recent clients…

How have you got to where you are today?

I was working in London when one of my colleagues came in looking fantastic. She was a strawberry blonde lady and walked in wearing a bright red dress suit. I was really impressed! I promptly booked in to have my own colours done and was so amazed by the difference it made to my life that I later trained to be a colour consultant.

In a few words, describe yourself…

Dedicated, passionate, caring, kind and supportive.

What are you spending your time on at the moment?

I have recently been exhibiting at Wedding expo’s to promote our Bridal Classes – we teach the bride the shading of colour, style and shape of her wedding dress, her hair and make-up looks for the day and (based on her top colours) advise her on the colours for decor, flowers, groom’s attire and bridesmaid dresses.

Do you have a ritual for getting into the creative mindset? Or a creative process?

I like to get to the studio early to prepare before my client’s arrival. I like to have everything ready for the day and compose myself.

What or who inspires you?

My clients inspire me. Really! I love giving them the joy of seeing themselves looking fabulous — and then seeing how that can change their lives.

What are you most proud of?

I just love making a difference in people’s lives. And I love hearing how it has impacted their lives down the track.
Most of my clients gain huge amounts of self confidence and this filters through their entire lives – both personal and professional.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Ride horses, be a ballerina and at one point become a chemical engineer!
