Interview with photographer Todd McGaw

toddmcgaw3Todd McGaw is an unreal Brisbane photographer. I mention Brisbane, so as a city, we can claim him as ours. When really, Todd is a super talented guy, and along with his wife Alyda, gets to travel ALL OVER the place to take amazing photographs. And I found out last week that he even photographed my cousin’s wedding a couple of years back.Todd is definitely making his mark on the wedding photography scene. His shots are out-of-the-box, really different – or how else do you explain it? They are sometimes rolled in with some humour and really capture the personality of the couple. Todd is sought after by couples who are looking for something just a bit different for their big day.

And his talents don’t end there! Todd’s landscapes, corporate and fashion photographs are also highly regarded.

Todd is also really laid back about his latest recognition. After years of hard work, many, many weddings and lots of weird and wonderful locations, Todd was awarded 2011 AIPP Queensland Wedding Photographer of the Year!

What a massive year it’s been so far for Todd and Alyda. He also was awarded his first Gold Print Award and many Silver Awards as well!

So if you haven’t got it already, this guy knows his stuff! So follow him on Twitter, stalk him out on Facebook and his blog. And check out the juicy tomato he blogged about recently. Delicious!

For the larger photographs, and to truly admire his splendid work, check out the official Todd Hunter McGaw website and the photography blog.

How have you got to where you are today? I really got into photography to escape the 9-5 mega corporate world job I had. I was really unhappy in that environment and decided to explore photography as a career.

I had studied photography and was working a little, assisting commercial photographers and kind of just fell into weddings after friends asked my to shoot their weddings. I really enjoyed it and people raved about their wedding pics – so things just grew from there.

In 103 words, describe yourself… I’m average height & build with brown hair *dad joke*.

Ok so Todd went a few words over….

I love photography… I love it to bits. And I love shooting weddings. I tend to take ‘un-weddingy’ photos but they still look weddingy if you know what i mean.

So we attract clients that are looking for something more than just really nice wedding photos. We take the really nice ones as well, but they have a slightly different flavour to them. I take photos to live, I don’t live to take photos and I think this is what fuels my creativity. I am very curious and I couldn’t live without music.

What are you spending your time on at the moment? Well now that i’ve finished all Angry Birds levels, I’ve got nothing to do – joking!

The spring wedding season has just hit so things are pretty crazy at the moment. But when I get a few spare seconds, I try to get out cycling as much as I can (mountain biking and fixed gear/track). Also working on developing new products for our wedding clients, reading lots of books, blogs and magazines.

Do you have a ritual for getting into the creative mindset? Or a creative process? My goal is to maintain a perpetual state of creativity. Naturally, my brain is more artistic than analytical, so I have to bribe my brain into thinking about all the business, marketing and time management stuff.

Basically, my creative brain has made my analytical brain it’s b**ch. So by using my analytical brain a little bit, it gives my creative side more powers.

It’s still totally not easy to be creative all the time, but i have learned things like, eating well, exercising my body and exercising my brain by reading and trying new things, getting enough sleep and being a little bit organized, can totally reduce my stress levels. And stress is a creativity killer.

What or who inspires you? I get inspiration from lots of things. I recently got totally inspired by a tomato … Read the article here.

I’m inspired by other artists, pop culture, and general people that are outwardly passionate about something – or anything!

What are you most proud of? 10 years of marriage to mine excellento wife. We work together full time and we still like each other!

I also won 2011 AIPP Queensland Wedding Photographer of the Year – that was pretty nice.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Batman, a builder, a fireman, a pro BMX rider, a rally car driver, a teacher, marine biologist, advertising executive, musician, facilitator/training officer… being a photographer is working well for me now, but I’m still not really sure what I want to be when I grow up!
