Interview with illustrator/cartoonist Britt Wilson
Fortunately the store she works for have seen the value in her amazing comic talents, and recently she’s been hand painting signage and comic characters in the windows. Some of the window features include Captain America, Harry Potter and other super heroes. Have a stroll through her blog to see the photos.
Britt also writes comics under the name of Uterus Parade with her mate Vicki. Whoa, they have some fun together! And on another SUPER exciting note, some of Britt’s work is currently being published by Conundrum Press! So stay tuned for more info via her blog.
You can see more of Britt’s work on her website and follow her sketching, comic and drawing adventures through her blog.
How have you got to where you are today? I’ve been drawing, colouring and making art since I was a wee little thing. Both my parents are very artistic people. My mother was a designer, and my father is a carpenter/finisher, plus they are both talented amateur photographers. So basically my interests were fostered in a wonderful environment.
I remember a day when both of my parents congratulated me (probably a little too enthusiastically) for colouring inside the lines in one of my million colouring books.
I went to a very arts focussed high school, and then bumped around post-secondary at OCAD (Ontario College of Art and Design) and the Sheridan Institute, finally leaving with a BAA in illustration. Right now I’m busy making minimum wage stocking bookshelves and running home to draw and snuggle my boyfriend and cat until way past my bedtime.
In a few words, describe yourself… I am a silly girl. The silly part likes farts and burps and other bodily functions. The girl part insists on shelving all my books according to size and colour.
What are you spending your time on at the moment? At the moment I am busy missing deadlines on a collection of old and new work I’m putting out with Conundrum Press. Hopefully it will be debuting at TCAF next year. My website is also in need of some TLC, but I keep putting it off because (secretly) I’m afraid of the internet.
Do you have a ritual for getting into the creative mindset? Or a creative process? I have a series of criteria that need to be met before I can get down to work. It changes frequently, but currently this is the ritual…
If I’m in the planning stages I need either silence, or instrumental music, and usually an empty apartment. I find it very difficult to think properly when there are lots of auditory distractions.
Once the planning phases are over, however, then I NEED sounds! When I’m drawing/inking/painting music doesn’t cut the mustard, I listen to audiobooks mainly. I tried talk-radio for a while, but it’s usually depressing and doesn’t give much fodder for my imagination. Lately I’ve been working my way through George R.R. Martin. I also loved A Short History of Nearly Everything, and the Harry Potter audiobooks are SO GOOD.
What or who inspires you? I find inspiration in so many things. I follow a lot of other people’s work, but sometimes that can get me down because I start comparing myself to much more talented artists.
I’m also inspired a lot by people-watching. A lot of scenarios that appear in my comics are actually snippets of real life. People do/say the dumbest things, there is some stuff you just can’t make up! You wouldn’t believe some of the comic GOLD I have witnessed just walking down the street.
What are you most proud of? I’m most proud of how long it’s been since I’ve had to make a withdrawal from the bank of mom. I’m proud every time I finish something that I know I’ve worked hard on. I’m proud of my friends and all the amazing work they are all doing.
When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? When I was little I alternated between wanting to be a filthy rich and famous artist (which I believed existed), a singer in a band, and a ballerina. Even the discovery that I posses a crippling kind of stage fright, and was way too chubby to fit into a leotard did not dampen my ardour for the latter two careers.
Only with time and cynicism did I realize I only really had the one option. I’m still working on the filthy rich and famous part.
