Interview with artist Thom Stuart

Thom Stuart is an experienced and very talented designer and artist! Growing up in Iluka, on the NSW north coast, he’s had a strong interest in art and music from an early age.

Thom traded his drumsticks, for an inner city Brisbane apartment, to move here and study design at the Queensland College of Art. After successfully completing this and a few design jobs on the Brisbane scene, moved to London to pursue his art and design further.

Since moving back to Brisbane earlier this year, he’s been producing some fantastic work with the team at Bright Yellow (read our interview here). With a love for surfing as well, he’s recently completed a fantastic large-scale wall painting for Sls Surfboards on the Sunshine Coast.

In a few words, describe yourself…

Umm, minimal?

What are you spending your time on at the moment?

Working on some new screen prints and paintings at Love Love Studios between design work with Bright Yellow Studio.

Do you have a ritual for getting into the creative mindset? Or a creative process?

I guess… I just jam on some music and get to it. Making a start on any project is always the hardest part.

What or who inspires you?

Could be anything! Mostly, trips to galleries are pretty safe bets for inspiration and sometimes even the daily train to work. The train lines, in my opinion, have the best paintings on show in Brisbane.

What are you most proud of?

When was maybe 7 or 8, I won a colouring in competition run by the police to promote stranger danger or something.

A proud moment right? It would have been except they came to school and thought it would be funny to pretend that I was going to be arrested in front of the whole class before awarding me with $20 for first place. It was pride and terror all wrapped up in one.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Well, painting on walls is still fun to me, so I guess some people would still consider me a child.
