Behind the scenes with artist Sarah Hickey
For our last artist conversation for 2013, we travelled to the home of vibrant artist Sarah Hickey. Sarah’s vivacious personality shows through in her work. Her energy draws you to her. And her paintings are vivid, colourful feasts. So many layers and textures competing, yet also working together. Years of being an art teacher and practicing artist shine through too, as Sarah shares so many well-articulated gems about creativity.
Once again, another creative swears by the teachings of Julia Cameron’s book, The Artist’s Way. Sarah’s long conversations during this shoot told us all about her rut and how she needed to teach herself to just let go and play with her art. To not be too hung up on the result, but to relish in the act of creating.
Sarah’s journey is a common one where her day job teaching didn’t allow her the time to create. Many, many years later, she finally allowed herself to explore and with much practice, has allowed her layered and mixed media technique to develop.
It is really such a joy to hear someone speak so honestly about the ups and downs of their individual creative journey. And it makes me even more intrigued about her work.
It was such an honour to chat with Sarah and we can’t wait to bring you more artist conversations in 2014.
