Jenica Smith in her Brisbane creative studio reading design books

Design Montage combines interviews of Australian design talent, tips, tricks, and ideas for creative professionals, student designers, and emerging talent. We hope to inspire your creative journey, teach you a few tips to be more efficient, and help chase the elusive work/life balance many creatives crave.

Where it all began

This site began back in the day when blog rolls and RSS feeds were cool. Jenica started writing about design things and colour mood boards and somehow began interviewing creatives. She reached out to past colleagues and friends in the industry to see if she could interview them about their creative practice. This snowballed into over 100 creative interviews in a couple of short years.

The interviews started gaining traction and helped raise awareness of the creatives featured on the site. It led to wonderful collaborations and many creatives across Australia and then internationally who reached out to be interviewed.

Written and curated by designer, Jenica

Design Montage is run by Brisbane-based designer, Jenica Smith. Her career began with a traineeship at a leading advertising agency in the early 2000s, during weekly trips of buying muffins and coffee for the team, archiving CDs, and completing Illustrator tutorials. Within a few years, she was a key designer in a busy studio working on blue chip clients.

Over the years, Jenica’s worked in marketing and digital agencies completed a Master of Digital Design, and now specialises in customer experience.

Her passion for reading, writing, and talking about design and creativity. Jenica hopes that her knowledge and ideas will inspire a new generation of designers and those looking to pursue a creative career. When not writing online, she’s walking her two dogs, camping, travelling, or going for bush-walking adventures with friends.

Brainstorming ideas from concept through to launch has been a rewarding part of her design career and this site is one of those ideas brought to life. She’s also obsessed with stationery, and this life-long love affair for lovely notebooks led her to create sustainable stationery brand Notely.
